Abstract
Olfactory bulb is a lamellated structure and axon terminals of olfactory neuron of olfactory neuron layer end in glomerular layer. Knowing distribution of the various neurotransmitters of glomerular layer will be an important clue to elucidate
olfactory
neurotransmission. Authors resected rats' olfactory bulbs and treated them with seven antibodies for neurotransmitters to observe the distribution of neurotransmitters.
The juxtaglomerular cells around glomeruli showed tyrosine hydroxylase(TH), gamma-aminobutyric acid(GABA), leucine-enkephalin(ENK), somatostatin(SOM), and neuropeptide-Y(NPY) immunoreactivity. TH immunoreactive cells were most predominent and
GABA,
ENK,
SOM & NPY immunoreactive cells were observed in decreasing frequency. NPY immunoreactive cells were rarely observed at the junctional area of glomerulus and external plexiform layer. The centrifugal afferent axon terminals revealed DBH & 5-HT
immunoreactivity.
